The chemistry of Monel 400

Monel® 400 is a nickel based alloy and was developed by Special Metals group of companies. It contains a minimum of 63% Nickel which gives the alloy its high resistance to both heat and corrosion.  Next largest constituent is copper with 28-34% content. The relatively high copper content in the alloy means that the alloy also has good electrical conductivity. This makes it a good choice for those applications that require conductivity in corrosive environments.
Iron is the third most prominent element in monel 400. Iron is the most common element found on Earth by mass and is used in this alloy to contribute to elevated strength.
Monel® 400 contains around 2% of Manganese. Manganese is similar to iron in that is contributes to high strength.
After Manganese, Silicon is the next largest constituent of Monel®400, with 0.5%. Silicon contributes to the alloys corrosion resistance properties due to being highly unreactive, but also contributes to the electrical conductivity of Monel® 400. Silicon is the 8th most common element found in the universe and is a very important element in modern electronics and micro technology.
There is 3% carbon found in Monel®400, which contributes to its strength and structure.
Lastly, there is around Sulphur makes up around 0.024% of Monel 400®. This small addition of Sulphur means that the alloy is resistant to attack from many types of Sulphuric acid.
